Best TV Christmas
Episodes

Episodic television seems to go to the well for one of two sure things: A Hawaiian vacation/adventure or a homespun Christmas-themed episode.

Focusing on the latter, it seems as if everyone from Kojak to The Sopranos celebrates the tradition.

However, in terms of capturing the spirit of the celebration, some have done it better than others and that’s what this list is about.

Here’s a rundown of the best Christmas-themed television series episodes in no particular order. Well, OK, they are in chronological order.

The Honeymooners: ’Twas the Night Before Christmas (1955)

“Hey there, Rahphie boy!” The so-called Classic 39 are some of TV’s best. Hands down! In this one, Ralph buys Alice a crappy gift before learning it is such then hocks his cherished bowling ball to get her something better. Meanwhile, in an O. Henry-like twist, Alice gets him a bowling ball bag.

The Jack Benny Show: Christmas Shopping (1960)

He’s cheap. If you’re under 40 you might not know that. He’s also got a highly-paid valet named Rochester. If you’re under 30 you might not like that. But he’s funny as hell and in this episode he goes Christmas shopping and drives a nervous clerk (Mel Blank) to an untimely demise.

Eight is Enough: Yes Nicholas, There Is a Santa Claus (1977)

Popular TV actor Dick Van Patten headed the Bradford home back in the 70s who, true to life, lost their mother Joan (actress Diana Hyland), suddenly and tragically. Son Tommy (then heartthrob Willie Aames) found nothing to celebrate until an unearthed letter to him from his deceased mother surfaces. A three-hanky episode.

Alf: Oh, Tannerbaum (1986)

Willie cheaps-out on a real tree and Alf has never seen snow, sooooo… Road trip to the Angeles Forest where laughter and sentiment ensue. [Best line: “Have you been to this place in person or just in your head?”]

Frazier: Miracle on Third or Fourth Street (1993)

Dr. Crane’s having a bad day until a group of down-and-outcasts at a local diner who have it even worse reach out to him.

King of the Hill: Livin’ on Reds, Vitamin C and Propane (2003)

One of the better episodes, I’ll tell you whut. Promising to return by Christmas, Hank rents a big rig to move some furniture in Arizona and his prowess on the dicey roads earns him a place in the Trucker’s Only area of a rest stop.
